On the mainland of Kedah, approximately 60km south of Alor Setar, lies a beautiful one kilometer stretch of sandy beach known as Pantai Merdeka. An enchanting beach shaded by tall swaying palm trees. Pantai Merdeka is an inviting spot to picnic or laze away the hours in the sun. Water skiing and sailing are also popular along its coastline.

If camping out on a coral island is your kind of holiday dream, the nearby island of Pulau Bidan, just 1 km long and 0.5 km wide, is the answer.

Merdeka Beach Resort is the only hotel on Merdeka Beach. It is popular with local companies as the venue for off-site seminars and teambuilding events. The resort is located near the promenade, allowing easy access to the area.

From Alor Star, take a bus to Sungai Pertani and from there board another bus from Kota. At Kota, change buses to reach Pantai Merdeka.

To get there by taxi, either hire a taxi from Alor Star to there or Sungai Pertani. From Sungai Pertani, proceed to Pantai Merdeka by bus or taxi.
